Roots: The Silver Anniversary - Brief Article
Mondella S. JonesIt's been 25 years since literary master Alex Haley's Roots was first published in 1976 and then given everlasting video life in a ABC miniseries in 1977 (See BIBR's two-part Tribute by A'Lelia Bundles starting in July-August 2001, page 12, and continuing this issue, page 30). To commemorate the occasion, a one-hour 25th anniversary documentary special will air on NBC, January 18, 2002. Senior associate producers for the project, husband-and-wife team Tammi and Paul Garnes, are seeking people in the Los Angeles area who are willing to give an on-camera interview about the impact Roots had on their lives. They would also like to interview anyone who is heavily researching their own African roots. Also needed are families hosting family reunions between August and October, home movies and photos from 1975-1979, and people named Kizzy or Kunte. There are paid production-assistant positions, internships in the Los Angeles office, and opportunities for research.
