Teresa Y. NeelyWomen Athletes of the New Millennium: Superstars of Women's Tennis
by Ellen Miles Aladdin Paperbacks, August 2000, $5.99, ISBN 0-689-83959-6
Miles provides biographical snapshots of nine powerhouse women tennis players, some retired, but most of whom are currently at the top of their game. The book provides biographical sketches and full-page, color photos of many of the top players, including Serena Williams and Venus Williams. She's also included articles with information not commonly known about the players.
Did you know that both Venus and Serena Williams speak French? The sketches also include information about the players awesome skills, what makes them the ones to beat, how they made it, and what they do to remain at the top of their game.
Although at any one time there are 20 top players, this book only includes nine of the great women in tennis. Miles' volume may have had wider appeal had she included other phenomenal players, like Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Conchita Martinez or Mary Pierce. Still, this is a book that will inspire children, especially African American girls (and boys!) initially inspired by the Williams sisters' reign, to follow their dreams and become major forces to be reckoned with in the sports arena.
