VO-67 crew remains verified
Fischer, GregPeace of mind has finally come to the families and friends of nine servicemen whose modified P2V crashed 35 years ago during the Vietnam War. Crew 2 of VO-67 was on a classified mission from Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, dropping sensors and listening devices along the Ho Chi Min Trail when the P2V crashed into a Laotian mountainside, killing all on board. Noted Ed Witt of NAS Whidbey Island and a former plane captain in VO-67, "These missions were very hazardous. We had to fly low and slow, 500 feet at 250 knots."
Recovery of the remains began in 1996 and was completed in March 2002. This year, full identification of the crew was completed and the remains were returned to their families. A group ceremony was held in June at Arlington National Cemetery where six of the nine are buried and where a monument in commemoration of the crew stands.
