Mathopoly - math game - Brief Article

To reinforce the concept of counting and exchanging money with my fourth graders, I created "Mathopoly," a game similar to Monopoly except that students buy food, not property.
Each child begins with $30.10 and uses it to purchase food such as a hamburger ($2.65), fries ($.85), and fruit cocktail ($.50). Children work to create a full meal by completing a color group, which includes one item for each course.
When a student lands on a food, he or she may buy it. If the food has already been purchased, he or she must pay the owner $.50 for a main course, $.25 for a side dish, and $.15 for a dessert. Students play until the allotted time is up. Whoever has the most money, including the value of each food card, wins.
