Specialized rockhopper A1 FS
Reed, RobThe A1 FS is a price point benchmark for nine-speed shifting. Last year's addition of a ninth gear, which brought the total to 27, expanded the range in the preferred direction (i.e., lower). We can now pedal hills once deemed "hike-a-bikes." An alloy stem and rise bar take pressure off the lower back and hands. And many of the components-wheels, tires and cranks-are found on models costing twice as much. The aluminum alloy frame, however, is straight gauge tubing, which is both heavier and less forgiving than butted. Overall, it can function as a light trail bike or hard-core bike path machine, Specialized: 877/808-8154. $600.
