Football: So-called 'fans' let Leeds down

LEEDS UNITED fans shamed their club as they refused to observe a minute's silence in memory of George Best.

Referee Mick Fisher was forced to end the tribute midway through as the travelling fans sang anti-Manchester United songs, to the disgust of the Millwall crowd.

The match was a predictably ugly affair with both sides contesting every ball in a congested midfield and produced more yellow cards than clear-cut chances before Ben May deflected David Healy's shot into his own net in injury time.

Colin Doyle, making his debut in the Millwall goal following his deadline-day loan move from Birmingham, led a charmed life early on.

Twice inside the first 20 minutes he was left helpless as shots bounced off the woodwork.\

Eddie Lewis made a yard of space for himself in a crowded box in the 13th minute only for his effort to cannon off a post to safety with Doyle beaten.

Five minutes later Healy let fly from just inside the area but again his shot struck a post before the Millwall defence smuggled the ball away.

But Doyle later showed his quality in a man-of-the-match display.

Midway through the half the rookie keeper was called into action again when a poor pass from Ady Williams was intercepted by Healy, but Doyle dashed out to save well at the feet of the Northern Ireland striker.

Millwall continued to press and contest the midfield but lacked quality in the final third. Leeds looked the more likely to score, but Millwall's defence refused to buckle.

Doyle again came to his side's rescue in first-half added time when substitute Jonathan Douglas sprang the home side's offside trap but the keeper made a crucial save.

Fletcher did well to keep a lid on this fiery contest that threatened to boil over at any point.

Millwall new boy Zak Whitbread, booked just after the start of the second half, was lucky to escape with only a lecture when he hauled down Rob Hulse on the edge of the box.

Barry Hayles came close to giving Millwall an undeserved win with a shot that was heading for the top corner until Neil Sullivan tipped it over.

Doyle capped his display with a point blank save from Douglas in the dying minutes only for Healy to ruin his day with the last-gasp winner.MAN OF THE MATCH
