A NEW BEATNIK GENERATION
Susan WrightTHOMAS DOLBY, the man who gave the pop world Hyperactive back in the Eighties, has made it his mission to get web pages grooving. Through his company, Headspace, he has developed a technology called Beatnik.
Web users install the free Beatnik plug-in on their computer and when they browse Beatnik-enabled websites they hear Beatnik-produced sound - either short sound bites or complete tunes (all with built-in copyright controls.
Dolby learnt plenty in the pop world).
What sets Beatnik apart from other music delivery systems on the Net is the quality of sound it can produce in a small, fast-loading file. Dolby's aim was to create an audio player for the Net which plays great sounds on any computer with any soundcard. And he's succeeded. Beatnik delivers awesome, crisp-clear sound fast.
The sound on the Headspace website plays almost instantaneously hearing is believing.
Headspace provides plenty of jaw-dropping Beatnik sound files to play with. Play them loud and anyone listening in will believe you're playing an ordinary music CD in your computer.
The Upbeat music collections featuring 10 tracks of feisty techno- metal groove and the Underground collection, which dives into more hardcore beats and ambience drums, are especially worth a blast. The Beatnik player can be downloaded from Thomas Dolby's Headspace Web site at http://www.headspace.com.
