Maggie gets wedding snub from Hague Groom-to-be Hague's snub for
Robert GibsonTory leader William Hague has snubbed Margaret Thatcher...by not inviting her to his wedding.
She is not on the list of guests to see him marry Ffion Jenkins at the House of Commons Crypt on Friday, despite putting him on the road to political stardom.
Senior Tory officials said the couple are still angry with Lady Thatcher for saying they should not have shared a hotel room at the Tory Party Conference in Blackpool.
"Ffion, in particular, is still smarting over the remarks," one said."Lady Thatcher may have helped Hague on his political way - but Ffion feels their private life is none of her business."
There is also a feeling that Lady Thatcher's presence might take the limelight away from Ffion on her big day.
"Photographers and cameramen might have been more interested in getting a picture of William and Lady Thatcher together than him with Ffion," said another party source.
The official line is that the wedding is restricted to "family and friends" which would still appear to be something of a putdown for Lady T.
Mr Hague is regarded in the party very much as her creation. She hailed him as a Tory Cabinet minister of the future when he made a rousing speech to the party conference as a 16-year-old.
And she decisively threw her weight behind him in his fight with Kenneth Clarke for the party leadership.
Since then Mr Hague and Lady Thatcher's relationship has been described as "distant."
Around 170 guests are expected at the wedding. There will be a party on Wednesday at the Carlton Club for parliamentarians.
But only five Tory MPs have been invited to the actual wedding ceremony.
