The Celtic Tenors The Celtic Tenors (EMI Classics) HH
Philip GatesALL hail the new breed of CD, the "classical crossover". We've had angelic Charlotte Church and sexy string quartet Bond. Now we've got three classically trained Irish singers - Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Niall Morris - bringing a modern touch to folk tunes and Celtic songs in a record which has already gone gold. Some work well, such as Spanish Lady, but others smack of the Titanic touch, especially the reworking of An Eriskay Love-Lilt which left this listener lilting over the toilet. Sadly, the need for commercial success has tempered any real innovatory versions of the songs on offer - rather a case of safety first and watch the success. But we haven't heard the last of this trio.
