ROMAN REVELSAT pounds 5m PARTY

MIKE THEODOULOU in Latsi, Cyprus

THE guests wore togas and a giant cake was delivered by eight "Roman slaves" as the 50th birthday celebrations of BHS billionaire Philip Green continued for a third night.

Diana Ross and Rod Stewart were among those lined up to sing to 200 of Green's guests who included Prince Albert of Monaco and showbiz stars Jeremy Beadle, Stirling Moss and Michael Aspell.

It was a complete change from the "black and white" party on Friday night when Tom Jones and Earth, Wind and Fire provided the entertainment for men dressed in black jackets and women in glitzy evening dresses.

On Thursday, the day the guests arrived, George Benson sang for the birthday boy.

The pounds 5million party - organised by Green's wife, Tina, 52 - took place at the Anassa resort hotel, an exclusive retreat for the rich and famous in Cyprus.

Flowers alone are reputed to have cost pounds 50,000, and pounds 35,000-worth of caviar had been flown in together with a special French chef.

Rooms at the Anassa range from about pounds 200 a night to more than pounds 1,500 for the two-bedroom presidential suite.

The party location had been kept a closely-guarded secret that was only leaked as guests began arriving on the popular holiday island.

The discreet Anassa is highly regarded among celebrities for keeping their presence quiet.

It is operated by Thanos Hotels, which is owned by the family of former Cypriot foreign minister, Alecos Michaelides, who was among the guests.

Those who arrived on a chartered Monarch Airbus 300 on Thursday were not even aware of their destination when they left Luton Airport.

Others arrived on private Lear jets from Stansted and Northolt on Friday.

Rod Stewart and Demis Roussos were among many more who flew in on regular Cyprus Airways passenger flights.

Green's guests had the 35-acre resort completely to themselves.

But many took advantage of their break to go sightseeing.

Most of the performers were put up at two other hotels in Paphossome, 30 miles away.
