LAKESIDE EARNS `A' IN FIRST GAME

Bob Coleman Correspondent

State A girls

Even when things went wrong they went right for Brianne and Lora Jolley.

With their Lakeside Eagles well in command of their opening round game at the State A girls basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome, Lora threw up a 3-pointer. It fell miserably short, but right to Brianne. She laid it in for two points.

"It was meant for me to do that," Brianne said of her sister's impromptu pass. "That's what we'll say anyway."

That's just the kind of game it was for the entire Lakeside team. The Eagles jumped ahead early and out-lasted an overmatched La Center team for a 46-31 victory.

Lakeside (22-1) advances to the quarterfinals today at 8 p.m. against Seattle Christian (18-4), which beat Toledo 52-42. La Center (17-7) takes on Toledo (21-3) in the consolation round today at noon.

Newport (18-7), the Northeast A League's other entry to the girls tournament, wasn't as fortunate, falling 62-24 to top-seeded Lynden Christian (25-0). The Grizzlies face Foster (19-3), which was upset 76-70 by Liberty Bell (21-5).

Lora, a 5-foot-8 senior, and Brianne, a 5-10 sophomore, combined for 35 points. Brianne went on a rampage early, scoring 12 of Lakeside's 13 first-quarter points. She missed her first shot and then made her next six.

Lora, meanwhile, shadowed La Center's top scorer Misty Snider. Snider, who averaged 14.4 points per game, made just 1 of 6 shots and 1 of 2 free throws in the first half.

"They took her out of the game and forced her to make some bad decisions," La Center coach Mike Allen said.

"If we could control that girl (Snider), we could control their offense," Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz said of Lora's defensive task. "She's shut down numerous scorers this season."

And she proved she can score too.

With her sister out in foul trouble, Lora banged down seven points in the second quarter and added 11 more in the third. She finished with a game-high 19. At the same time, she pulled down seven rebounds and held Snider to just 10 points.

"She finds Brie when she's in there," Schultz said. "But Lora's comfortable being the dominant scorer when she's not."

Brianne finished with 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Carrie Waddell dished out a game-high six assist for the Eagles.

Nikki Petticrew and Bernadette Rowse each had six rebounds for Lakeside. Lynden Christian 62, Newport 24

The draw couldn't have been much tougher for the Grizzlies. Newport hasn't been to the state tournament since 1985. For the Crusaders, it's an annual trip. Lynden Christian has been in the title game four times and won three of them since Newport's last state game.

The difference in experience showed.

The Crusaders led 12-0 before Heidi Schulz finally put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard. The rout continued as Lynden Christian ran out to a 21-5 advantage after the first quarter.

Newport could score no more than eight points in any quarter. Lisa Berendsen scored a game-high 18 points for the Crusaders. Julie Wynstra added 12 and Carla Geleynse finished with 10.

Newport was led by Michele Carrara's seven points.
