MASSIVE BILL FOR JUSTICE

MIKE HAMILTON

IAN Huntley's trial would be one of the biggest in Britain for decades and the cost could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

He would be represented by a top barrister who would be paid pounds 10,000 a day with the cost being met by legal aid.

Four major names in the legal profession are already in the running to represent Huntley. They are:

Clare Montgomery, 44, the most highly-rated woman barrister of her generation who represented ex-Chilean dictator General Pinochet in his fight against extradition. She also represented Leeds United's Michael Duberry on a charge of perverting the course of justice in the trial involving Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate. She works alongside PM's wife Cherie Booth QC.

William Clegg, 53, is regarded as Britain's leading war crimes lawyer and he was approached to defend former Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic who is

now on trial at the Hague.

Anthony Scrivener, 67, who represented the Guildford Four, the Irishmen whose conviction for a 1974 IRA bombing was overturned 15 years later.

Anthony Arlidge, 65, the least known. His most high-profile case was the defence of Terry Ramsden, the 1980s City whizz kid and racehorse owner, who ended-up in jail for fraud. He also represented one of the families in the Guildford Four appeal.
