Seek a new doctor - Letter to the Editor
Anita ShahI was extremely disturbed by your article "My Quest for a Cure" (My Story) in the January/February 2002 issue. Hyperthyroidism is a serious disease and if left untreated can kill up to 30 percent of its victims. It can lead to arrhythmia, confusion, dehydration, and problems with menstruation. Most readers would consider this information critical to understanding the disease. Why wasn't this information in the article? While exercise and herbs have a role to play, it is irresponsible to suggest that medical therapy is unnecessary.
Although author Sharon Reese is without symptoms, she is still hyperthyroid. She should be treated by the many different treatments available for hyperthyroidism. A good doctor should be available to explain the pros and cons of the various therapies and help minimize the side effects. She needs to find a doctor with whom she can build a better relationship and who can address her concerns. I seriously encourage her to get medical therapy.
