JAZZ CAROL KIDD A PLACE IN MY HEART (LINN) HH
Philip GatesTHERE'S no doubt Carol Kidd has a big following in Scotland and her popularity is well deserved. But I just didn't enjoy this record. Sure, her husky tones do justice to many a number, yet the CD as a whole fails to fizz. Perhaps part of the problem is the weighting towards slow numbers - four out of the first six. As the album went on I was crying out for a something to set my pulse racing and feet tapping. But it didn't happen. Subsequently I couldn't get into the CD and by the time Carol started I'll Never Smile Again I almost felt like it was my signature tune. Yet, there was a little light at the end of the tunnel - I've Got You Under My Skin was an enjoyable respite from the languid tempi and Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered actually did restore a smile to my face and the tap to my feet. Diehard Kidd fans may enjoy, but I'll be sticking to my Ella Fitzgerald collection.
