JOLLEY GOOD TIME FOR LAKESIDE A GIRLS
Bob Coleman CorrespondentLakeside led Seattle Christian for just 33 seconds in their girls State A high school basketball quarterfinal. Fortunately for the Eagles, 26 of those seconds were the final moments of the game.
Senior Lora Jolley banked in a 10-foot jumper with 26 seconds left to give Lakeside a 37-36 win at the Tacoma Dome. Her sister, Brianne Jolley, a sophomore, scored a game-high 20 points.
Lakeside (23-1) moves onto the semifinals today at 5 p.m. against Cascade (22-3). Tournament favorite Lynden Christian (26-0) faces Castle Rock (20-5) at 6:30 p.m. in the other semifinal.
Freshman Nikki Petticrew assisted on the winning basket, kicking out a rebound off a Bernadette Rowse missed 3-pointer.
"The ball came out of nowhere," Jolley said of Petticrew's pass. "She snuck a little bounce pass around their ankles."
Jolley didn't hesitate with her 10-foot jumper.
"Her shot isn't as sharp as it was in the beginning of the season," Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz said of Jolley, who has played the last five weeks with a broken thumb.
Jolley, a four-year-starter and three-year captain, scored just eight points. Four came in the final 1:24, including the game-winning bank.
"I usually don't use the glass," Jolley said. "I had the angle and said, `I'm going to make this,' "
That basket gave Lakeside its first lead since 5:47 remained in the first quarter when the Eagles were up 4-2.
It looked like Seattle Christian might put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors broke a 25-25 tie with an 9-0 run.
The Eagles started to snipe at each other and Schultz countered with a time out with about six minutes to go. As the team huddled Schultz tried to calm her team, but it was a freshman who set the tone.
"It's our game," Petticrew told her teammates.
The Eagles owned the game from then on.
