YOUR GARDEN: DO IT!
Edited by Adrienne WildTOUGH TASKS
TURN part of your lawn into a flower patch. Scatter miniature bulbs such as crocus, snake's head frittilary and narcissus randomly across a grassy area. Plant them 3-4in deep. Note that mowing areas of lawn that have been planted with bulbs should not be carried out before June.
IF you garden on clay, dig new beds now. Mix in well-rotted manure to improve the soil and sharp grit to improve drainage.
BIT OF EFFORT
TAKE cuttings of frost-tender plants such as fuchsias, pelargoniums and argyranthemums for next year's displays and dig up the mother plants to be overwintered under protection and used for a further supply of cuttings next spring.
SHRED woody prunings and coarse vegetable waste before putting in the compost bin. Make a separate bin ready for making leaf mould next month.
DEAD EASY
PLANT out spring- flowering wallflowers and forget-me-nots.
SOW parsley in rich soil to provide leaves for winter and spring use. Germination is slow, so be patient.
REPLACE spent summer plants in containers with late- flowering chrysanthemums for instant colour.
PLANT bulbs in pots and borders. Get daffodils in as soon as possible and plant tulips in batches between now and November for a continuous display of colour until May.
