At the movies: SON FRERE (15)
MARK ADAMSTHE STARS: Bruno Todeschini, Eric Caravaca, Nathalie Boutereau, Maurice Garrel
THE STORY: Two estranged brothers - Todeschini and Caravaca -one gay and one straight, have to become reconciled when the older (straight) brother contracts a rare blood disease. The younger brother takes care of him, helping with the doctors and taking him to their childhood house in Brittany.
WHAT'S GOOD? Powerful and harrowing drama from director Patrice Chereau, with Eric Caravaca especially impressive as the surviving younger brother. In essence a two-hander and very moving in detailing the realisation of approaching death.
WHAT'S BAD? Pretty gruelling to watch and far too slow. The story, despite its dramatic potential, feels very simple and obvious.
HOW LONG IS IT? A gritty 93 mins.
FINAL VERDICT? Tough stuff but yet it still feels oddly contrived.
