COLFAX TUMBLES IN TERRIFIC GAME
Bob Coleman Correspondent1A girls
The Colfax girls came in and did what they wanted to do - play hard, have fun and make memories.
Despite losing their girls 1A State basketball tournament quarterfinal game, 64-62, to Toledo in overtime Thursday, the Bulldogs seem to be satisfied. "I'm not disappointed," said Colfax's lone senior Laura Widman. Colfax coach David Ebersole appreciated the intensity of the game and the excitement it generated. "You couldn't ask for more from our kids," he said. "People got their money's worth tonight." The loss certainly wasn't from a lack of effort on Widman's part. The 5-foot-10 forward made 10 of 16 shots for a game-high 22 points. Many of those came off her five offensive rebounds. She finished with 11 rebounds. "I hate it when I have a good game personally and we lose," said Widman. "I'd rather miss all my shots and we win or make all my shots and we win. That's the ultimate goal." She'll get that chance today when the Bulldogs (16-9) move into the consolation bracket for a 12:30 p.m. game with Warden (16-10). A win would put Colfax in the game for fourth and seventh places on Saturday. Toledo (22-3) advances to the semifinals to face Lynden Christian (22-4). Colfax and Toledo traded the lead seven times in the second half. The biggest lead was 46-39 for the Bulldogs, after Widman hit two baskets in a row in the third quarter. The Indians made an 8-0 run to regain the lead midway through the second half. Moments later, Becky VanTine and Jessica Rohner hit back-to-back buckets, giving Colfax a 54-49 advantage with just 4 minutes, 43 seconds left. Sarah Miller brought the Indians back with a 3-point shot then capped a 7-0 run over a 2-minute span with a short jumper that tied the game at 58-58. In overtime, Tiffany Dobosh opened the scoring with a basket and she was fouled. She made the free throw for a 61-58 Toledo lead. "You don't like to see that momentum shift," said Ebersole. "She's a senior and she's been there three times before, I think. She hit a big shot for them." Colfax missed its next two shots before Jeri Shannon connected on a pair of free throws. Rohner followed with a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left. And with 8 seconds remaining, Beth Miller made a free throw to make the score 64-60 and put the game out of reach. Widman scored a layup for the final margin. Rohner finished with 17 points. Sarah Miller added 18 for Toledo.
