Christian Life Bookstore offers personalized service
Jessica Brown / CorrespondentFor three years the Bursch family had been eyeing a building at 510 E. Francis Ave. It waited until 1987 to purchase the building, which was in poor condition.
In the spring of 2003, the Christian Supplies store that was leasing the 6,000-square-foot space moved out, and Pat Bursch came out of retirement at age 70 to open the Christian Life Bookstore.
"We thought a locally owned store would better meet the needs of our community," said Bursch.
In order to meet those needs, Pat has on several occasions made deliveries for people who physically couldn't make it in the store. "I had a lady once call and ask me to mail her a necklace for her granddaughter. Her house was on my way home, so I just delivered it to her house."
Pat Bursch works with her daughter-in-law, Faye Bursch, who manages the store. Together they have for 60 years of experience working in Christian bookstores.
The store carries Bibles, music, gifts with scriptural emphasis, books and church supplies. Pat Bursch said the atmosphere is conducive to browsing, with tables and chairs scattered throughout the store. The store is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The building is also home to several other businesses, including the Cornerstone Cafe. The cafe is the newest addition to the building and is owned and operated by Mickey Tuter. It offers iced and hot coffee drinks, pastries and more. Groups are encouraged to meet for Bible studies there, adjacent to the fully stocked Bible study section of the Christian Life Bookstore.
The cafe is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Also operating within the building is Amend Music Store and Flash Brothers Media Inc.

Designer's Edge Hair & Nail Salon
In the past two years, Designer's Edge Hair and Nail Salon has undergone a business makeover.
In 2002, salon owner Chris Connors purchased the property at 411 W. Francis Ave. and moved her salon from the commercial space she was leasing. Connors has since then developed the property and added to the list of services the salon offers.
A new, nonsurgical face-lift that skin-care specialist Wanda Smith offers is one of the popular new services. Her Celltronic Visage machine, Smith said, "wakes up skin cells, reverses the effects of gravity, removes dark circles and lifts the muscles back to where they belong."
Smith also offers facials, waxing, body bronzing and Reiki.
Smith's co-workers include manicurist Deborah Voltz, massage therapist Amanda House and seven hairstylists.
"We are always continuing our education to keep up with new trends," Connors said, "whether it's a seminar or a class." Smith, for example, is set to attend an aesthetics convention in Las Vegas this weekend.
The salon will hold an open house event on May 21 from 2 to 6 p.m. to promote Smith's new face-lift machine. Five-minute chair massages and paraffin dips will be available for $5 with proceeds going to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.
Designer's Edge will also be offering featured monthly specials on services, and discounted packages are available for Mother's Day. Hours are Monday through Saturday and vary by appointments scheduled.
