摘要:We collected sediments from a eutrophic lake and explored the impact of aeration and crayfish on the release of phosphorous from the sediment. The experiment was conducted in nine 18-liter aquaria with a layer of 10-cm sediment on the bottom of each aquaria. Treatments included: (1) no aeration, (2) aeration with crayfish (Cherax destructor), and (3) aeration without crayfish with three replicates for each treatment. Aeration significantly increased the level of dissolved oxygen but did not affect pH. The presence of crayfish in the aerated aquaria significantly enhanced the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and the release of total phosphorus (TP) from the sediment. In the treatment with only aeration, concentrations of SRP in water and TP released from the sediment were significantly greater than those without aeration but were less than those with crayfish addition. After four weeks, the percentage of TP released from sediments to water column was 0.9%, 4.4%, and 7.5% in the treatments of no aeration, aeration only, and aeration plus crayfish, respectively. Our results indicate that activity of benthic invertebrates can be an important means of releasing phosphorus from sediments.
