摘要:The emergence of digital platforms allowing users to incorporate dwellings, or parts of them into the offer of tourist accommodation is very recent. In addition, the holiday rentals boom is simultaneous to the consolidation of urban areas as tourist destinations. The effects of the conversion of the dwelling’s use from residential to holiday use in urban areas is receiving major attention from social scientists. However, although this activity has become global, studies have focused on Europe and the United States. In this paper, we provide empirical evidence about this phenomenon in the Latin American context through the study of Mexico City and São Paulo. We measure the intensity of holiday rentals and identify the social and demographic characteristics of neighborhoods where it has penetrated. Results reveal that holiday rentals are concentrated in areas with unique sociodemographic and housing characteristics, and that they have reached high intensity in specific neighborhoods.
