摘要:The article aims to revisit Celso Furtado's concept of cultural dependence and underdevelopment from the evolutionaryapproach, but specifically through the institutionalist and neo-Schumpeterian approaches. Our working hypothesis is thatcultural dependence can be understood as a historical institution, a kind of long-lasting cognitive habit. The habit ofmodernizing foreign consumption patterns is a form of institutional-cognitive imprisonment, which constrains thedevelopment of creativity in local economic agents. Such institutional imprisonment restricts the innovative dynamics ofnational companies, as they develop in an economic system where the incentive structure rewards imitative actions to thedetriment of processes of searching for disruptive innovations. Temporally, the emulator habit of local agents, rootedsecularly in the cognitive processes of society, leads companies to develop “little creative genes”, limiting them inmicrodynamic terms to lead Schumpeterian competitive dynamics.
