摘要:Global population statistics reveal that 2007 was the first year in human history that over half the world population lived in urban agglomerates. This proportion of the “urban” population in Europe is now even higher; at over 80 %. While the inner city areas are highly populated, urban ecosystems form part of every city and provide people with major benefits. We define these benefits as the cultural ecosystem services, and these form the subject of this contribution. A functional public space requires the following basic attributes; habitability, residential functions and capacity for varied activities. The people populating and frequenting these areas are the end-users of successful public spaces. The aim of this paper is to create an assessment method that clearly establishes the quality of public spaces for fulfilment of cultural ecosystem services in the urban environment. The main criteria in assessment of vegetation areas are environmental and vegetation quality and spatial design and management. The proposed methodology also considers economic assessment of ecosystem services and the availability of vegetation areas for the population. Our evaluation is based on the example of the Chrenová district in Nitra – a significant public space from both architectural and landscape view-points.
