摘要:Nearly half of all freelance journalists in Germany have secondary employments; many of them in public relations. This double role may lead to difficulties; since journalists and PR-practitioners have to fulfill different duties. As a journalist; they contribute to a “public duty”; providing independent information and criticism. PR practitioners; on the other hand; primarily represent their clients’ particular interests. As a result; conflicts may arise which present a challenge to journalistic independence. The study at hand focuses on these “PR-journalists”: We conducted a quantitative online-survey with freelance journalists who also work in PR. Results show that most respondents state they have no choice but to assume this double role for economic reasons. However; a percentage of the freelance journalists also freely choose to work in PR; considering the work to be interesting and fun. Moreover; concerning their professional self-concept; those “PR-journalists” barely differ from other journalists in Germany. The respondents are aware of the fact that their double roles can lead to certain conflicts. The majority; however; rarely experiences such conflicts at work. Yet; the journalists assume that their colleagues who also work in both occupations face these conflicts more often and cannot handle them adequately.
