Abstract This work presents the experience of the Amazonian Cities Research Group of the Federal University of Pará, on applying methods and techniques from the Urban Morphology Schools in the understanding and planning of the Amazonian cities. It aims to present the research context from the historical antecedents of the urban and regional occupation to characterize mainly the hybrid nature of the urbanization and the production of the city in the peripheral and frontier context of exploitation of natural resources of the Brazilian Amazon. The research results were grouped in blocks according to their adherence to the categories of analysis and methodological principle of the main European schools of morphology, exemplifying as situations of diffusion and adaptation of historical-geographical and typological categories for the study of the cities of the Eastern Amazon. Thus, it highlights changes on the categories of analysis for characterization and form analysis of these cities, which aims at proposing subsidies for public policies and advances on the research of urban morphology in northern Brazil and related contexts on the planet.
