摘要:Textual logic implies a sequence of concealment and revelation, as shown in the description of the poem composition process, included in Edgar Allan Poe’s text The Philosophy of Composition, the demonstration displaying, with honesty, all the ”masks” of the writer. Denying the interference of hazard, Poe reveals the exact extent to which hazard lies at the origin of the creative approach, the arbitrariness of his options being dissimulated behind an alleged premeditation; in fact, the artistic prejudices prevail over any calculation. Most of the criteria invoked by Poe are statistical, the writer claiming his recourse to universal means. In fact, many of his theses can be suspected of arbitrariness and even of irony and the exaggerated contrasts enhancement betrays a naive poetics. Sketching a complete equation of the creation and the creator, Poe’s text lays the basis for a system of roles around the poem – masks having a precise function, displayed on three levels; the construction of the article itself could be illustrated by the presence of three other masks that contain each other. Although Poe was often accused of insincerity, rarely has any writer presented more explicitly ”the masks” assumed throughout the text.
