摘要:In this cross sectional study, the healing o f patellar tendon (PT) defects created during anterior cruciate ligam ent (ACL) graft har ves tmen wa s evalu ate d using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).A total of 25 patients who had A CL reconstruction using the central third of PT co nstituted the stud y group.A verage age a nd male to female ratio were 26 (range:18-38) an d 21/4 respectively. In all ca ses,the PT d efect wa s left open but the paratenon was sutured. The patients were grouped according to their postoperative period as follows:immediate postoperative (n=4)f 6th month (n=5)t 12th month (n=4)t 18th month (n=5) and 24th month (n=7).MRI investigation w as done by mea ns of a GE 0.5 Tesla machine. The PT defect was evalu ate d at the proximal, middle and distal areas of the tendon on axial section s on Tl weighted images. While the defect w as les s tha n its original size in all periods (P<0.001),no case resulted in complete healing. The size of the defect demonstrated a gradual decrease fro m immediate postoperative to the 18th month period (P<0.001).Then there wa s a little increase a t the 2 4th m onth compared with the 18th month. However, the defec t at this period wa s still significantly less tha n the imm ediate postoperative period (P<0.001).These data demonstrate that the complete healing of the PT defect would not occur during two yea rs postoperatively.Orthopaedic surgeons sho uld be prudent in view of extensor mecha nism complications and avoid recurrent excision o f the grqftfrom the sa me tendon.
