  • 摘要:This article examines changesof Surakarta outlook in the early twentieth century. Surakarta was originally anIndis city, since the beginning of the XX century it progress ed toward a colonial city. Based on the Dutch officialreports in Surakarta, contemporary newsp apers, and secondary sources, the city changes began with increasingnumber of Dutch female immigrants who came and settled at the city . They established nuclear families viamarriage with fellow Dutchmen, so that the Dutch European community at Surakarta became stronger and moreestablished. It was strengthened by the government's confidence to intervene financial affairs in Javanese palacesand overhaul traditional structures by government reorganization and agrarian affairs. The government alsoimplemented canonization policy in law, educati on, and culture. This policy was originally intended toimplements European values in the Indies. However, in the policy development turned out to spawned a colonialsociety that was soon followed by the erosion of i dentity as Indis city . The canonizatio n policy also impact ed onthe changing patterns of intercommunity relations manifest ed in multi discriminatory practices at variousdomains, that harass ed and degrade d the Indo community, especially the indigenous community . Both of themthen were rediscover ed their identity order.
