Abstract: The boleadeira is one of the most popular archaeological artifacts of the Plata region, not only by the academic community but also by the general population. Its production process remains surrounded by many assumptions, most of them do not resist empirical trials. In view of this situation, a survey of pre-colonial origins of this artifact was provided, as well as a literature survey of chronicles reports of that instrument, and then reported an activity of production and use in an experimental way. At the end, it is presented the operational sequence of the experimentation and the considerations of this process applied to the study of archaeological collections.
