摘要：Examination of some aspects of the peasant economy which in defiance of the central government was based on the cultivation of tobacco. The author emphasizes the dynamics of economic change on a local level in the Cibao. Tobacco cultivation created a mercantile class in the towns, which eventually became an important social force.
