The purpose of the study is to investigate the relation between self-esteem and values held by candidate teachers. The model used for the research is relational survey model which is a subtype of general survey model. General survey model is based on screening all elements or a subset of elements within a domain in order to come to a judgment about the domain itself. Research workgroup is 1245 candidate teachers studying at S.U. Ahmet Kelesoglu Faculty of Education. The data acquisition tools used in the research are, Schwartz Value Inventory, which is developed by Schwartz in 1992 and contains 57 value statements and 10 sub dimensions [Schwartz & Boehnke, 2004]. Kusdil and Kagitcibasi (2000) adaptation is also applied. One other tool which was used is Self-Esteem Scale. This tool was developed by Aricak in 1999 and contains 32 items. According to the research results of self-esteem and values relations, a positive relation was observed for power, success, hedonism, self-direction, universalism, benevolence, conformity and security sub dimensions. No relation was observed for stimulation and traditionalism sub dimensions.

Values is a topic of social sciences which studies existence of humanity; judgment of what is right; what is good or what is desired and the actions and behaviors which corresponds to these. People require knowing values in order to be able to feel that their behaviors are right; good and reasonable. This requires people to have a set of values as a basis for them to justify their rightfulness. People need targets to justify their actions and values to assess them. Method: Model used for the research is relational survey model which is a subtype of general survey model. General survey model is based on screening all elements or a subset of elements within a domain; in order to come to a judgment about the domain itself. Using these methods; singular or relational screening can be done. Relational Survey Model aims to research the existence and/or the degree of a relation between two or more variables. Results: It is observed that candidate teachers’ self-esteem is positively related with their values; power; achievement; hedonism; self-direction; universalism; benevolence; conformity and security. From sub-dimensions of Adjective Based Personality Scale;neuroticism is positively related with power and negatively related with self-direction; universalism; benevolence; conformity and security values;extraversion is positively related with power; achievement; hedonism; stimulation; self direction; universalism; benevolence and security values;openness positively related with power; achievement; hedonism; stimulation; self direction; universalism; benevolence; conformity and security;agreeableness positively related with achievement; hedonism; stimulation; self direction; universalism; benevolence; traditionalism; conformity and security;conscientiousness positively related with power; achievement; universalism; benevolence; traditionalism; conformity and security. Discussion and conclusion: According to the research results of self-esteem and values relations;a positive relation was observed for power; success; self-direction; universalism; benevolence; conformity and security sub dimensions. No relation was observed in stimulation and traditionalism sub dimensions. The sub dimensions of the values scale verify the self-esteem by 098. It has been observed that;the values owned; significantly explains self-esteem. The following sub dimensions significantly explain the self-esteem: power; success; hedonism; self-control; universalism; benevolence; conformity and security.
