摘要：In the transition from one historical moment to another, the understanding of religion and its institutions change. This article will deal with the change of historical sense experienced by the Society of Jesus in Brazil, due to the work of the Instituto Histórico Geográfico Brasileiro, IHGB, the institution founded in 1838, to which the Empire granted the authority and means to write the history of the “Brazilian nation”. Using the institute´s magazine, between its foundation and 1940, we will address the controversy over the Jesuits in the 19th century and how a consensus was formed according to which the Society of Jesus would appear as one of the founding institutions of Brazil.
