摘要:Animal-assisted activities are an emerging field in public health and provide physical and psychological benefits on patients’ health. The veterinarian should monitor dogs used in these activities to promote the animal’s health and that of people involved. Activities were developed to prepare dogs to interact with and serve elderly people, as well as engage in physical activities and improve self-esteem. This study worked with five dogs between two and eight-years-old of both genders and different breeds during three months. These dogs received socialization training and basic commands to be able to begin activities with the elderly. The veterinarian gave guidance to tutors through booklets, and periodic evaluations of the dogs were carried out in order to monitor and ensure the animals’ quality of life. At the end of the training the dogs were able to carry out the proposed activities with elderly. The veterinarian’s role was observed to be relevant in working with other professionals in public health. It is believed that this multidisciplinary partnership in health area can greatly improve the quality of animal-assisted activities.
