摘要:Water uptake characteristics of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with green silicaparticles extracted from rice husk ash have been investigated. The composites wasdeveloped by incorporating the rice husk silica particles in the weight fractions of 0.5,1, 2, 3, 4 and 6% in an epoxy resin using manual mixing and hand layup method.Water immersion test was used to evaluate the water absorption behaviour from whichthe water diffusion mechanisms of the developed composites were established. Resultsshow that the water uptake process appears to be diffusion controlled. The weightgained and percentage water absorption by all the composites increases withimmersion time and increasing particle loading respectively. The highly filled samplesshowed higher water absorption which is largely due to agglomeration of rice husksilica particles. Parameters such as saturated moisture content, diffusion coefficientand sorption coefficient are dependent on filler content. The diffusion curve fittinganalysis which evaluates the diffusion exponent (n) values show that all thecomposites developed exhibited Less Fickian behaviour (also considered as Fickiandiffusion mechanism). This implies that the water penetration rate is very much belowthe polymer chain relaxation rate.
