摘要：In this paper we discuss the social and contradictory role of the University, based on Gramscian production, emphasising the relationship between hegemony, education and organic intellectual proposed by the author. The reflections are centered on the territory of the Coast of Paraná, locus of action of one of the campuses of the Federal University of Paraná. In order to discuss the contributions of this institution in the debate of public policies and in the development of the region, the text presents some projects and actions in progress, as well as demands and potentialities identified from the systematization of the teaching practice in this region, which involves teaching, research and extension programmes. The Gramscian perspective subsidizes and reinforces the need for articulation with social movements, the formation of a new sociability, as well as the construction of emancipatory educational practices.
