摘要：Giovanni Villani describes Dante as a honorable citizen belonging to an ancient and prestigious ancestry. According to his chronicle, Dante’s banishment from Florence was exclusively due to his political role in public city life. This portrait is indeed quite surprising: biographies and scholarly literature describe the poet as a man of humble origins and mediocre political influence. Historical facts and scholarly reconstructions thus yield a very conflicting description of Dante. Thanks to an accurate research into Dante’s social network during his last years in Florence, the article aims at contextualizing his role in public city life.
