摘要:Literature is one of knowledge that has artistry and creativity inside as a form of expression of thought, idea, and imagination. Long time ago, literature has been an important subject because through literary works, someone could blow up about facts or injustices that occurred in that period. Nowadays, literature is not a special subject anymore because most of people have less appreciation in literary works and judge it is a prosaic study. In this research, the writer analyzes a main character in the novel Flowers of Algernon. The aims of this research are (1) to portray a mental retarded person that occurs in Charlie Gordon as main character; (2) to find out the similarities and differences between Charlie’s characters and based on psychology theory; and (3) to find out the causes and effects compared to the theory in describing the character in novel Flowers of Algernon. The writer uses a psychological approach to analyze character and the writer uses qualitative method as the research method. As the result, the writer finds six characteristics of Charlie as a mental retarded person, namely IQ score 68, poor concentration, failure to relate with other people, anxious, fearfulness, and feeling tired easily. There are five similarities (low IQ, poor concentration, failure to relate with other people, anxious, fearfulness) and one difference (feeling tired easily) between Charlie’s characters and psychology theory. There are twelve causes and effects compared to theory in describing the character. Key Words: Character, Mental Retardation, Phenylketonuria
