摘要:This paper analyzes the critical perspectives of Antonio Candido and Roberto Schwarz on Machado de Assis. Master and disciple, respectively, mobilize Sociology as an aid to the literary criticism, which prevails in both of them, given that they postulate the "relative autonomy" of the work in relation to the social environment. Antonio Candido, however, studies the Brazilian literature "formation" in sociological terms inherent to the "literary system" notion, constituted, in addition to the works, of authors and readers who interact through a tradition gradually established. According to Candido, Machado de Assis confirms the system maturation because he matched the great writers of his time. Schwarz's interpretative view radicalizes Candido's perspective because emphasizes more deeply the sociological precision of the writer's work.
