摘要:This paper presents a study of the derivatives dulceça, dulçor, dulçura and dulcidom as attested in the medieval Portuguese translation of the Libro de Isaac, in an attempt to explain the motivations for the occurrence of these derivatives in the text and, by extension, in the Portuguese language. The study was based on the analysis of correspondences of these forms in six manuscripts of the Latin and Romance tradition of the Livro de Isaac (two in Latin, two in Portuguese, one in Spanish and one in Catalan). Possible main motivations for their presence in the Portuguese translation are fidelity to a model in the translation process (to a Spanish model in the case of dulçor and a Latin one in the case of dulcidom) and the scribe’s desire to register a linguistic distinction (in the case of dulceça and dulçura). The data also suggest that dulceça, dulçor and dulçura are borrowings from Spanish, whereas dulcidom is the historical continuation of a latin derivative.
