Mayo Displaced Camp (Khartoum State). School of Health Sciences, Ahfad
University for Women. Omdurman.
The study aimed at investigating the nutritional status of
adolescents in a displaced camp. Adolescents respondents (300) were
randomly selected (160 males and 140 females) within the age group 11-18
years from Mayo Displaced Camp (Khartoum State).
Primary data were collected using a questionnaire for information
about nutritional habits of the respondents and anthropometric
measurements for Body Mass Index to assess the nutritional status of the
adolescents in the study area. The collected data were analyzed manually
and the results were presented in the form of frequency and percentage
tables.
The results showed that 45% of female respondents and 31% of males
were underweight, compared to 45% females and 37% males who were normal.
Malnourished respondents were found to be 10% females and 32%
males. These results indicate an alarming nutritional status of the
studied group, both male and females.
The recommendations include further investigations on the
nutritional status of adolescents in displaced communities to provide
enough database for the formulation of strategies and interventions to
improve the nutritional and health status of those marginalized
communities.
