University for Women. Assessment of the awareness of community
pharmacists about drug contraindicated for G6P Deficiency patients
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the awareness of
community pharmacists about drugs that are contraindicated with
flucose-6-phosphae dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency patients, and
resulted in serious hemolytic anemia.
The area of study was Omdurman, Khartoum and Khartoum North and the
sample size was 152 pharmacies which were randomly chosen.
The primary data was collected through two prescriptions; each one
contained a drug which is contraindicated with (G6PD) deficiency
patients to record the response of the pharmacists.
The first prescription contained Co-trimoxazole48 + Ibuprogen 200mg
+ Amoclan 375mg and was tried on 70 pharmacists.
The second prescription contained Co-trimoxazole 480mg + Ibuprofen
200mg + Amoclan 375mg and was tried on 70 pharmacists.
The second prescription contained Artesumine + Panadol 500 mg +
Vitamax ans was tried on 82 patients.
For the first prescription none of the pharmacists knew that the
Cotrimoxzole Is contraindicated with (G6PD) deficiency patients. Only
seven pharmacists knew that the drug is contraindicated after consulting
a pharmacology reference or internet source.
It was, therefore, recommended that all schools and faculties of
pharmacy should include in their curricula courses on pharamaceuticale
care and communication skills.
