Abdalla 2012. Assessment of the awareness of community of pharmacists
about contradicted drugs for asthmatic patients
This study aimed at assessment of the awareness and knowledge of
the Sudanese community pharmacists about contraindicated drugs for
asthmatic patients. The area of the study was Khartoum North and
Omdurman at the Khartoum State. The target group included 152
pharmacists who were randomly selected and divided as follows: 80
pharmacists from Omdurman, and 72 pharmacists from Khartoum North. The
primary data was collected through two prescriptions one for each area
and both prescriptions included contraindicated drug for asthmatic
patients
The secondary data was collected from books, journals as well as
internet sources.
Findings included: For prescription one, none of the pharmacists
referred the patient back to the doctor and only 12 out of 80
pharmacists refused to dispense the prescription. Also 7 out of 80
pharmacists asked if the patient had asthma and still dispensed the
medicines.
In prescription two one of the pharmacists referred the patient
back to the doctor and 9 out of 72 pharmacists inquired if the patient
had asthma and still dispensed the medicine.
Accordingly, it was concluded that the Sudanese pharmacists'
awareness about contraindicated drugs for asthmatic patients seems very
poor. A grayer situation is when the pharmacists asked the patient about
his/her disease and still dispensed the medicines. Moreover, it is very
obvious that they have poor knowledge in communication skills. It is
therefore, recommended that the curricula of pharmacy schools and
faculties in the Sudan should include pharmaceutical care and
communication skills courses. Pharmacists should be exposed to frequent
training programs to update their pharmaceutical knowledge of
contraindicated drugs in general, especially for asthmatic patients.
