  • 摘要:
A massive earthquake and tsunami hit northeast Japan on March 11, 2011. The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles are a professional baseball team based in Sendai, which was one of the hardest hit areas by the tsunami. Although the team was not able to use their damaged stadium until April 29, the 2011 regular season kicked off on April 12, a month after the earthquake. The Eagles' opening game was played at the Chiba Lotte Marines' home stadium, approximately 400 kilometers away from Sendai. The game attracted a crowd of more than 20,000 fans, including hundreds of fans from the northeast. In the stands, fans held up signs of support for the devastated areas, saying "Stay Strong Japan!" Away from the stadium, those who lost furniture, homes, and families watched the game on television in shelters. While most Japanese people are in a mood of self-restraint in response to the catastrophe, the major professional sports teams play an important role not only in cheering up people, but also in promoting a sense of unity in the Japanese society. "Stay Strong Japan!" is currently used as the main theme for the Japan Professional Baseball League.
