摘要:This paper objective is to analyze the history of the media discourse regarding the World Soccer Cup in Brazil. In a critical review of the constitution of mass media in Brazil, focusing on the World Cup - the most important sport event in contemporary Brazilian culture -, we analyze the historical relationship between this event and its media products during the 20th century. The combination of these two elements - football and mass media - resulted in one of the major phenomena of Brazilian media culture: the self-attributed definition of Brazil as "the football country". Without denying the legitimacy of the social concern towards football in Brazil, the focus of the study is to highlight the participation of the mass media in this process.
