摘要：Since the arrival of the British in the subcontinent, English enjoyed a prominent status in society. Though the British were long gone, their linguistic culture left a permanent impact on both India and Pakistan. Pretty soon, English became a second language to the people of the subcontinent and a language that everyone aspired to master. Fast forward to the 21 st century and we see English no longer as a British culture but an important subject that can open up a world of opportunities for us as English is now a universal subject. The aim of this study is to take a look at the role and current level of English in the Pakistani educational system, the need for English and the common hindrances that prevents a smooth acquisition of English as a second language in Pakistan, even though it is the country’s official language.
