摘要:Assessing the semantic similarity of terms is identified is an important step in many real world applicationsranging from information retrieval systems to Geographic Information Science (GIS). In geographicinformation science and semantics, the computation of semantic similarity and relatedness is widelyrecognized as key to supporting a vast number of tasks in information integration and retrieval. By contrast,the role of them has been largely ignored in this context. In this paper, the notion of geographic semanticrelatedness and similarity is discussed and their impotence is highlighted in task of Geographic InformationSystem. Subsequently, various measures conducted in this filed for computing semantic relatedness ofgeographic terms are reviewed and their potentials and drawbacks are mentioned. The article concludes bycomparing the similarity measures and giving general advice how to choose an appropriate semanticsimilarity and relatedness measure. Advantages and disadvantages point to their suitability for differenttasks.
