摘要:Is The Face guilty of RuPaul’s allegations or does the power of popular memoryeradicate any semblance of time, so that it seems that the 1990s never happened?Through the apparatus of popular memory this paper will focus upon the popularstyle journal, The Face, and its impact upon popular culture over the past 20 years. The content of The Face may have remained the same but major shifts in elementsof design and context can be easily traced since the 1980s. This exploration focusesupon the 1990s moment of The Face and it seems important, almost mandatory, that there is a discussion of how, and if, The Face has dealt with the time shift fromthe 1980s to 1990s. If so then why would the retro ‘queen’ of New York assume thatthe ultimate insult is one of past crimes? In short, this paper traces the politics ofmemory through the filter of The Face.
