摘要：Este trabalho pretende levantar, analisar e discutir as hipóteses sobre duas mortes, ocorridas numa aldeia de Portugal, a Gafeira, lugar criado pelo autor/narrador que lá se instala e tenta compreender o mistério não elucidado: o que aconteceu, de verdade, à Maria das Mercês, esposa do Delfim, assim como ao criado do casal, Domingos. Essas mortes podem ser consideradas crimes? A resolução do enigma é de pouca importância para a apreciação da narrativa, mas os movimentos de acareação do crime despertam o interesse do leitor e sustentam o valor da obra. O declínio da família de nobres pode ser lido como uma paródia da história de Portugal.
其他摘要：This work intends to raise, analyse and discuss the hypotheses concerning two deaths that happened in a Portugese village, Gafeira, a place created by the author / narrator who settles down there and tries to understand the unexplained mystery: what did really happen both to Maria das Mercês, the Dauphin’s wife, and to the couple’s servant, Domingos. Can those deaths be considered crimes? The resolution of the crime is of little importance for the appreciation of the narrative, but the movements around the confrontation of the crime arouse the reader's interest and sustain the value of the narrative. The decline of this noble family can be understood as a parody of the history of Portugal.
