摘要:Diversifying the teacher workforce by recruiting underrepresented teachers has become a crucial component of school improvement across the nation. Of importance to this research study is the extent to which differences were present in the percentages of teachers’ ethnic/racial composition as a function of school level (i.e., elementary, middle, and secondary) in Texas public schools for 2002-‐2003 through 2012-‐2013. Statistically significant differences were revealed in the percentages of ethnic/racial teacher composition by school level for the 11 years of data analyzed herein. The percentage of Black teachers at the elementary school level decreased for the 11 years. Similar to results at the elementary school level, the percentage of underrepresented teacher groups in middle schools remained relatively low for all 11 years. The percentage of Hispanic teachers and Black teachers in Texas middle schools increased at a minimal rate from 2002-‐2003 through 2012-‐2013. Asian teacher percentages remained the lowest (0.9% to 1.2%) for the 2002-‐2003 through 2012-‐2013 school years. As such, the ethnic/racial teacher composition of Texas schools remains predominantly White. Due to the extensive data that was analyzed, our findings are generalizable to the State of Texas teacher workforce. The extent to which these findings are transferable to other states is not known; however, based upon the congruence between our results and national statistics, we believe that strong generalizations can be made from our results to other states.
