摘要:Security identiy has received many different interpretations. Some of them are fueled by a too conservative perspective and, thus, consider collective identities to be free-floating entities, whereas others are underpinned by a too liberal approach that stresses the importance of identification and therefore the lack of any social constraints in choosing a certain identity. This theoretical article brings to the fore the concept of security imaginary, which is presented as the outward-looking dimension of every collective identity. I argue that when the security imaginary tends to become over-assertive it creates supplementary threats to the security identity of the neighbouring social groups. I also point out that under certain circumstances a too agressive security imaginary might be conducive for ethnic tensions although security imaginary per se cannot trigger ethnic violence.
